The Kent village of Iwade lies just 2 miles north of Sittingbourne. In 1798 the Manor of Warde was in the Hundred of Teynham, but it could only boast about 60 houses. Despite having only a small population to call upon, the village has staged 3 different types of races. In the 20th century it had a greyhound track and a speedway track, but it was in the middle of the 19th century that it hosted a horse race meeting on Monday 15th March 1852. The fine weather encouraged an immense concourse of people to the racecourse, including Officers from Chatham and Maidstone. The course was across 3 miles of excellent hunting ground on the outskirts of the village and the card began with a Match for 25 Sovereigns per side. It proved to be a one-sided match in which Mr Morgan’s Kiss-Me-Quick beat Mr P Barling’s Sobersides. The main event of the day, the Iwade Sweepstakes, drew a large entry and after a good contest the Even money favourite Malmesbury was pipped by a length by Kiss-Me-Quick. There are no further records of horse race meetings taking place in the village. |
